My First Placement Experience

Hey!

I’m Isi and I’m a 2018 intake on the HR stream. I studied Business and Management at University and came onto the graduate scheme after I graduated.

Having now completed my first placement, I thought the perfect first blog would be giving a brief overview of my experience of how it went to give you guys a bit of an idea of what you may be involved with if, like me, you are on the HR stream.

I started my placement in the Staff Engagement and Wellbeing Team. Here I undertook projects around increasing staff retention, improving medical education and created a poster for the new health and well-being strategy. I also attended a health and wellbeing training and sat in a few interview panels, asking the candidates the appropriate questions and observing the subsequent selection process.

I moved over to the Employee Relations Team after 3 1/2 months. With the ER Team, I supported with some of their case work, conducted sickness meetings, observed probationary reviews, investigations and shadowed disciplinary and grievance hearings. I learnt all about the Trust’s policies and the process in which they are constructed.

After 4 months with ER, I worked in Recruitment for a month. I managed the Bank Staff applications and became a semi-expert on TRAC (the online recruiting system), if I do say so myself.  I observed some consultant interviews and how different their recruitment was from AfC staff. I also created social media adverts for various job roles.

My last 3 weeks was spent with the workforce team. I created reports regarding the gender pay gap and BME staff representation, as well as creating a survey on their experiences and collating the data for the workforce plan.

I couldn’t have asked for a better first placement. I got on well with my colleagues and my managers we’re very accommodating! The best advice I could give to anyone starting their placements is not to be afraid to ask for some work do- especially when your competencies and work experience are concerned- and most importantly, have fun 😊
